2011 Barrett Reid Scholarship
Congratulations to Leonee Derr, Youth Services Librarian at Melbourne Library Service, who was awarded the 2011 Barrett Reid Scholarship at an event at the State Library on 30 November 2011.
Since 1990 the Library Board of Victoria has awarded the Barrett Reid Scholarship and the Margery C Ramsay Scholarship to develop the leadership potential of Victorian public library staff. One scholarship is awarded each year.
Leonee's project is entitled ‘Breaking Down Barriers: Engaging Young Adults by Creating a ‘Geography of Yes!’ in Public Libraries’. The $30,000 scholarship will enable Leonee to visit libraries in the US, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Estonia and Croatia and evaluate ways in which they provide dedicated spaces and services for community members aged 16 to 24.
Leonee’s research will focus on how libraries can continue to support young adults after they finish secondary school. Leonee intends to use the knowledge she gains to influence change in the Melbourne Library Service and to set new best practice in the field of youth services in public libraries.
